President al-Alim, UN Secretary General discuss humanitarian situation, peace efforts in Yemen

His Excellency President Dr. Rashad al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) along with the members of the PLC Aidarous al-Zubaidi and Othman Mujalli met, in New York, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting aimed to discuss the latest developments in the Yemeni national arena, mainly the humanitarian crisis that has been further exacerbated by the Houthi militias’ terrorist attacks on oil facilities and international shipping maritime navigation.

President al-Alim praised the role of the UN and its Secretary General, highly appreciating their efforts to mitigate the humanitarian crisis.

Al-Alimi detailed Guterres about the developments in the Yemeni national scene, the ongoing economic, legal and services reforms the PLC and the government have been working on and the needed interventions by the UN at different levels.

The President touched upon the meditiation good offices by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman to launch an inclusive political process guided by the UN.

His Excellency stated that the government is open for all initiatives aiming to establish peace in the country on the basis of the peace references agreed on nationally, regionally and internationally, particularly the UNSC’s resolutions in relevance.
The Chairman of the PLC also touched upon the Houthi militias’ violations of human rights against the Yemeni people and the staff of the UN’s agencies.

The UN Secretary General affirmed the commitment of the UN to support the PLC and the government, mobilize the needed resources to alleviate the humanitarian suffering and devote all efforts to resume the political process and to enable the Yemenis to build their own state that is based on the partnership, justice and respect of human rights.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Shaya al-Zindani, Yemen Permanent Representative to the UN Abdullah al-Sa’di and Ambassador of the Republic of Yemen to Washington Mohammed al-Hadrami, the UN’s Special Envoy Hans Grundberg and the Under-Secretary of the UN for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Acting-Coordinator were in attendance.
